Breast augmentation surgery, or augmentation mammoplasty, enhances the size and shape of a woman’s breast for a number of reasons, including:
Enhance the body contour for a woman who feels her breasts are too small
Correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy
Balance a difference in breast size
Reconstruction to the breasts
Both the site of incision and type of breast implants can vary based upon the individual needs of each patient. Implants can be silicone gel filled or saline filled. Silicone implants are by far the most popular after being re-approved in 2004. These implants look and feel more like real tissue. Implants are placed underneath the muscle or underneath the breast tissue through incisions that can be made underneath the breasts or around the nipple.
Breast augmentation is typically an outpatient procedure requiring general anesthesia and takes between 1-2 hours.
All patients are given a long-acting local anesthetic, so there is usually no pain when they wake up. In fact, some patients never need any additional oral pain medication in the post-operative period. Patients typically return to work after about 1 week, and return to normal exercise routines after 1 month. It is very important for patients to attend scheduled follow-up visits for a smooth recovery. During the first follow-up visit, the surgery site is examined to make sure the incision is healing properly.
The breasts may sit slightly higher during the initial weeks after surgery. This is a common occurrence. By 3 months, the breasts will drop to a more normal position.
